Systems Architecture

High-throughput stream engine

Production streaming pipeline ingesting 2.4 million events per second across four distributed availability zones. Built with zero-copy ring buffers and dedicated core affinities.

Initial Constraints

Legacy bottlenecks and heap limits

Horizontal scaling masked these structural flaws but multiplied infrastructure costs fourfold across regions. We established a strict hardware boundary: eliminate intermediate serialization, enforce CPU core pinning, and operate within a bounded 32GB off-heap memory ceiling per node.

The inherited message broker relied on standard JVM heap allocations, leading to stop-the-world pauses exceeding 400 milliseconds during burst traffic. Kernel context switches saturated physical cores while network sockets dropped frames under sudden sustained ingestion spikes.

Architectural Stance

Deterministic latency demanded off-heap memory pinning over garbage collection.

We traded runtime memory elasticity for absolute predictability. Allocating fixed ring buffers directly to hardware NUMA nodes eliminated allocation pauses entirely, maintaining zero frame drops under peak burst loads.
